Business environment of a private company, conflict situation in a public institution, marketing environment

You will begin to put together a report in which you describe, analyze and resolve a conflict situation that one of your family members was facing previously in a work-related situation of either a public or private organization. You will first provide a description of the relevant facts and decisive aspects of the conflict situation. In a second step, you will provide an analysis of interests, needs, and motivations of all involved parties.

Examples of conflict situations for the report:

1. Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a business environment of a private company, e.g. between a line manager and a team member about (perceived) underperformance.

2. Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a public institution, e.g. on the topic of (perceived) non-compliance with public policies.

3. Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a marketing environment, e.g. between an advertising agency and a dissatisfied client on the topic of (perceived) non-achievement of targeted sales as a consequence of an advertising campaign.

Further detail on the expected content of report:

1. 1. A factual description of the situation and of the interests, needs, and motivations of the involved parties, based on the results of your investigation:

a) What happened?
Provide a description of the situational facts and observable, binary behaviors (please note: not your judgment or interpretation of their behavior!) of the people involved in order to describe what happened before and during the conflict.

b) Why did it happen?

a) What motivated person/group A to behave this way?
Describe the open and hidden reasons for their behavior,
for example (but not limited to): their wants, interests, needs, values, expectations (visible / invisible), motivations (intrinsic? extrinsic?), personality drivers, particular innate talents, causal attributions, internal / external locus of control, cognitive biases, cultural biases, stress triggers, etc.

bb) What motivated person/group B to behave this way?
Describe the open and hidden reasons for their behavior,
for example (but not limited to) their wants, interests, needs, values, expectations (visible/invisible), motivations (intrinsic? extrinsic?), personality drivers, particular innate talents, causal attributions, the internal / external locus of control, cognitive biases, cultural biases, stress triggers, etc.

(For multi-party conflicts – continue with the same analysis:
cc) What motivated person/group C to behave this way? etc.)

2. 2. Factual description of the solution that was put in place at the time

Which solution was put in place at the time? Who put it in place? Which consequences in the behavior of the involved parties did the solution lead to?

3. 3. Your evaluation of the effectiveness of the solution that was put in place. Do you agree that this solution was the best one to resolve this conflict? Why or why not?

Use the theories, concepts, and tools discussed in class as well as a maximum of 5 sources of relevant academic literature in order to argue your point of view.
